Understanding AI Review Summaries

Overview


The AI-generated product review summaries let merchants leverage existing review data to enhance their product pages and increase conversion rates. Once enabled, AfterShip automatically analyzes product reviews and generates:


  • Topics — Key themes extracted from customer feedback
  • Summaries — A concise overview highlighting the top three topics with the most meaningful reviews



This offers quick, insightful information that helps shoppers make informed purchasing decisions. Additionally, merchants can access these summaries and topics in the AfterShip admin panel for a clearer understanding of customer feedback and trends.


What’s new?


At core, the latest updates focus on how merchants can manage and view AI-generated review summaries – both on the storefront and in the AfterShip admin panel.


Merchant-side experience


Merchants need to enable the feature in their AfterShip admin panel to start using AI-generated summaries:


  1. Navigate to Settings.
  2. Go to AI review summaries.



  1. Toggle the switch to enable the feature.



Once enabled, the system begins processing review data. Historical reviews may take up to 24 hours to generate summaries, depending on data volume.


How it works:


  • It summarizes only the product reviews and no other content types.
  • Historical review processing may take up to 24 hours depending on volume.
  • Since summaries and topics are both AI-generated, review quality and quantity matters:


a. If a product has no reviews or not enough meaningful reviews, a summary cannot be generated.

b. Reviews lacking useful information will be marked as “Meaningless reviews” and excluded from the summary.

c. If no summary is created, the summary section won’t appear on the store page. In the admin panel, merchants will see a message indicating that more reviews are required.

d. Products that share reviews within a product group, their topics and summaries will also be shared across all products in that group.

Shopper-side experience


To show AI review summaries to your shoppers:


  1. Go to Review widget.
  2. Click Customize and go to the editor.



  1. Navigate to AI review summaries.
  2. Click Show.



If merchants do not enable “Show” in the widget editor, the topics and summaries will only appear inside the AfterShip admin and not on your storefront.


Customization options: Merchant can customize the widget title and colors in the editor for brand familiar look and feel. 


How summaries appear to shoppers


Once enabled, shoppers will see a summary block highlighting the top three review-based topics that makes product evaluation quick and intuitive.
